Many people have a kneejerk response when violence and videogames are mentioned in the same breath. Depending on your viewpoint, violence is either the scourge of a bankrupt entertainment or an unfairly criticized way to have fun in an imaginary environment. In 2009, violence was used in a legion of different ways, and to give body to an array of different experiences. Blunt horror, comic exaggeration, nightmarish guilt, slapstick humor, Freudian catalyst, emotional manipulation, and abstract rumination; all sprung from the common seed of virtual violence. There is no single truth about violence in games anymore than there is about violence in ourselves. The more we become afraid of experiencing violence in our pastimes, the more distance we put between the ideas and their creators.
